How to Salt and Roast Pistachios the Quick and Easy Way

Pistachios are also known as the ‘smiling’ or ‘happy nut’ due to their hard casing that forms a smiley face when split open.

Pistachios are a wonderful cooking ingredient and can also be eaten on their own as a tasty snack. But did you know that the flavour of these already delicious bites can be enhanced by roasting them?

Why do we roast pistachios?

Salting and roasting pistachios is fun and something that everyone can do at home. You can change the flavour of these natural bites to suit your taste, with shorter roasting times producing a mild flavour and longer times producing a strong flavour. Roasting pistachios will also fill your kitchen with a fragrant aroma and tease anyone with an empty stomach. There are a few ways to salt pistachios, including boiling in brine, however this is our speedy take for simplicity at it’s finest!

How to salt and roast pistachios?

When it comes to roasting pistachios, always try to choose pistachios de-shelled or with slightly opened shells. Why? Because tightly closed shells are associated with unripe nuts, which are a struggle to open and don’t taste overly nice.

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  • Spread pistachios across a baking tray lined with greased paper and sprinkle with a generous amount of sea salt.
  • Bake for 5-10 minutes (or until the nuts change in colour to golden brown). Regularly shake your tray during this time to prevent sticking and keep an eye out for any signs of burning.
  • Once ready, remove the nuts from the oven and allow to cool.
  • Place a bunch of the roasted nuts on a kitchen towel and draw the towel up around the nuts to create a loose bundle. Hold this with your hands and rub together vigorously to remove the papery shells.
  • Sprinkle again with sea salt and you are ready to serve.

How to use roasted pistachios

Roasted and salted pistachios are great for snacking throughout the day and will provide plenty of natural energy. If you go to the gym or play sports, then feel free to use them as a tasty pre-workout snack that will keep your body fueled for the entire session. Roasted pistachios are also a great post-workout treat, as they supply the body with what it needs to recover after physical exercise.

Roasted pistachios can be used in a range of recipes too, providing extra bite along with a unique, nutty taste. Whether it’s for enhancing salads or crumbing fish, these natural goodies always shine.

Storing roasted pistachios

The good news for anyone following along at home is that roasted pistachios can either be eaten immediately or stored for extended periods of time.
